If you have a drive way in front of your garage like mine you can back up the passenger side rear wheel on to the curb (8 inches tall?) from the drive way. The wheel will be on the top of the curb but the belly of the van will be on the drive way. This will allow you to deal with shift linkage adjustment.

I just replaced the water pump from my 84 a few weeks ago. I did not have to remove the tin, crank pully, nor anything else. I removed the pump and the thermostat housing all together. But this is my 1.9. If yours is a 2.1 then it may be a different matter.
