It's funny this topic should come up today:

Actually Dave, you should get your facts straight... just kidding! I'm just psyched because brady and I just got back from our maiden spin on the new e85 tune, how's that for catching up with my dev goals Dave? all I have to say is SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!!!!!!!

But guys/gals it is so cool!! The first thing we noticed is that the exhaust smelled "funny" in that it really does smell a whole lot cleaner than the gasoline, although you can still detect the 15% by nose. We rushed over to the local smog station to get emissions numbers from the rolling road dyno test, but junior had already gone home(who works to only 4pm!? LAME)

Anyhow, the seat of the pants dyno is already picking up on some new power... and this is just my baseline. I'm going to setup some dyno time in the next week or two and bring it down to start work on the power tune. Much more so than for gasline, having multiple tunes for the e85 will yield some nice benefits, the econ tune will run the setup as lean as safe to make up for the additional fuel volume that e85 needs to make the same power(I'm hoping to lose only 10-15% in MPG for the econ tune vs the 25-30% normally associated with e85), and the power tune will take full advantage of the equivalent race-gas-like 105-110 octane of e85 + it's charge cooling effects. I was looking at injector pulswidths, and it doesn't look quite as bad as I thought in terms of the amount of extra fuel so things are on track.. but I'll collect some good mileage/consumption numbers as we move along... the good news is that the stock zetec injectors can support at least the baseline tune no problem... we'll see once I start to really give it some fuel and add loads of spark advance on the dyno for the power tune.

Jason in Colorado is going to be really happy, as once I email him this beta tune he can reflash his zetec and start running the 99 cent per gallon e85 they have in town in Fort Collins... SWEET!!! Did I say sweet already? So we should have some dumb low emissions numbers to share with everyone tomorrow.. likely the lowest a vanagon has ever produced while running/driving. But the best part is(and this will take some more testing to confirm) customers will simply need to download the new tune from the support and dev website and BOOM, they can run e85.

Ecstatically yours,

Jim Akiba

Bostig is in progress of setting up a E85 tune. They should have dyno results in the next coupe of months. My plan is to run a 2 boost levels turbo Zetec with one level for max efficency and the next for max power and E85. Both projects are running paralel to each other at Bostig, which is in the process of adding additional man power to help with there conversion demands and free up some time for Jim and Brady for R&D.

Cheers, Dave Syncro Westy Zetec soon to be Turbo/E85

I haven't seen this question asked so i thought just for the discussion, what would it take to convert our stock engines to run on e85. Also are any of the available engine conversions compatible to running on e85. The bostig zetec? or a subie? Just curious e85 is a buck cheaper at my gas station so i ponder the question. Adrian
