My 2001 Passat has got a constant humming sound starting from 25 MPH and up.
At low speed it is a cyclic repeating noise. It becomes a steady pitch proportional
to the speed (not engine RPM) and fairly loud. It sounds like a CV joint running dry
to me. I checked my owner's manual and it says CV joint is covered by VW's 10 year
100K drive train warranty.

I went to see a VW dealer yesterday. Asked for warranty service. I was told no
warranty for CV joints. I was given a $500 - $800 estimate. I argued that the owners
manual says it's covered. A 2nd service rep jumped out from next desk and said
in his 30 years at VW dealership he never heard of CV joint warranty.

What F-word should I call them? I had to leave and come home to read the manual
one more time and yes it says the coverage clearly there!!!!

I called another dealership. Same answer. Now they deserve FF-word (double F).
I said I had the owners manual on hand. Then he changed his words and said
it has a conditional warranty. If the CV boot is still original and isn't torn
then it's covered. Wow!!! FFF-word!!! They knew it but tried to deny it.

Now what if they make a cut of one of the boots and deny the coverage still? I
don't have any confidence to these dealers at all. They quoted $200+ for replacing
the fan belt for Passat.
