Larry--

OK, I just found your e-mail from a week ago and I see some of this is old news from others who posted. But here's my 2 cents with part numbers if you still need the advice. (or even if you don't;)

But here's the deal as I understand it. VW makes a switch that will turn on your radiator fan at a cooler temperature than the stock switch. According to the Bus Depot website the stock switch vs. "low temp." switch are as follows:

(these show the low speed on and high speed on in Celsius followed by the part number on the website _www.busdepot.com_ (http://www.busdepot.com) the switches are about $12)

3-point, low temp version, 75-70/82-77c 25195948175

Stock, 3-point, 85-74/93-82c 251959481K

You can also search that site for a thermostat that will open at a cooler temperature and in theory help keep your engine cooler. (from memory I think one opens at 85c and the other is 87c, but I'm guessing on that so double check.)

BUT, here's the other part of the deal in my opinion. With your problem, adjusting when the temp the fan goes on is a Band-Aid for some other problem. Because except in EXTREME conditions the stock thermostat and stock fan switch should keep your coolant temp at the correct level. Your current thermostat may be failing and not opening soon enough. Or your radiator may be falling victim to internal build up and not cooling as quickly as it should.
