Subject: Post-waterpump replacement - wires and noises
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed

Replaced the waterpump in my 1.9l WBX with no more than the expected annoyances. Very proud of myself for no leaks, given it is the first time I've worked on a watercooled VW. I still have plenty of lifting, revving and radiator bleeding to do. When my lovely assistant returns.

BUT

a) What is the new loud clicking noise coming from my engine that varies with engine speed?! If it was my BMW airhead motorcycle, I'd say it was a valve out of adjustment. If it was a Subaru, I'd guess a sticky or stuck lifter. Given the engine got very, very hot but did NOT seize when the waterpump seals failed, and the noise doesn't get louder, only faster with engine speed... What should I look for? And how expensive is it likely to be?

b) Post overheat, my O2 sensor light is on and the engine is running very rich (judging by smell). The PO somehow damaged the O2 sensor-to-green wire connector so almost all the wires are broken on the harness side if the connector. Do I connect the black wire to the wires running free inside the green wire in the harness, or to the inner green wire inside the same green insulation? Bentley offers no clues. I believe the O2 sensor is a "generic" Bosch.
