Does anyone else remember how radical the first beetle and bus "instrument panels" were, compared to the Detroit iron of the times? Only the speedo with a generator light and an oil pressure light! (Oh, yes, the high-beam indicator, too.) American cars of those days had a big panel with a separate volt meter, temp gauge, fuel gauge, etc, etc. We all thought the simplicity was a big advance, not just cheap!
