As long as the lower housing in not cracked, my suggestion would be to try some "Right Stuff" gasket compound available from NAPA auto parts. It comes in an aerosol can with a screw-on tip like a caulking gun, and dispenses like ready-whip desert topping.

I have been using this stuff for several years with and without gaskets (sometimes in lieu of gaskets) with excellent results.

No affiliation with either NAPA or Right Stuff.
