One of the downsides to BART was the importation of crime to the suburban areas. Criminals would ride BART to an area with nice cars, bust into them in the parking lot and loot them or try to steel them.

I had my '76 convertible bug broken into at the Lafayette BART lot, the BART police never noticed that someone was breaking into my car, but they were right there to issue me a parking ticket.

It made for a fun day to come home from work to find my car broken into and a parking ticket on the windshield.

(One of BARTS solutions to the number of car thefts was to issue a sticker for the back window of your car that identified you as a BART rider and to let law enforcement know that if they saw the car driving around during weekday work hours, they should pull you over to make sure that the person driving owned the vehicle - since you would presumably be at work and had left the car in the BART lot.)
