Bretts,
You're going to get deluged with responses so I'll throw in my .02. Since
you're out west, you got it made. If she's a keeper, hit up Daryl at AA
transaxle (29924 NE 173rd St. Duvall, WA 98019. None better from what I
hear on the list and that's good enough for me. If you're on the cheap, hit
up Daryl anyway. Beg for mercy and promise to scrub the inside of his
tailpipe with a toothbrush daily. At best he may be able to suggest an
"alternative". Other than that, hit craigslist or the list for possible
used units, grab a new clutch disc and some cold ones (for afterwards) and
make a weekend out of it. If it's not a keeper, well, there's always the
list. Someone will take it off your hands. Good luck.

Subject: Transmission Woe
No wonder I couldn't adjust the shifter linkage. The 3rd/4th gear
selector fork is loose on its rod. Something must have broken when the
engine backfired while driving in 4th. I know opening up an old tranny
is a very expensive proposition.
So, what is the list wisdom? Here's the situation:
'83 full Westfalia with rebuilt engine, 40k. As you all know,
overheated once. No leaks.
Minor body rust in usual spots - lower driver door, middle panel on
driver side. No other dents or broken glass.
Original, functional interior.
All camper gear, including fridge, stove, pump, and catalytic heater, work.
No poptop or other seal leaks; tent, all curtains, and screens intact.
Mounted Michelin X tires waiting to be installed.
Brakes good.
All instruments work. Aftermarket VDO tach.
Spare ICU, front calipers, Bosch starter, complete rear hatch, etc.
I paid $750 plus about $250 for waterpump, exhaust parts, gaskets
My budget is very limited and I know the transmission repair is
mechanically beyond my skills and tools. Cunegonde was supposed to be
my only car, since I rarely drive in-town. Should I:
Sell her as-is? (Are *you* going to buy her?)
Part her out?
Install a used transmission?
Store for the summer until I can afford a used transmission?
Store for a year (remember, no car for me) while budgeting for a trans
rebuild?
I live in Seattle; Cunegonde's in Portland and I can get her, or a
transmission, to Seattle or Portland - very slowly!
All recommendations welcome. I'm very sad, knowing my summer of fun
with my sweetie in a Westfalia, won't be.
