I'm a little late on the thread here, but did want to
make a point.
For those vehicles - and I am specifically thinking of
Westfalias with the evap way in back here - there is a
possibility of a very elegant and simple solution, but
no one manufactures it yet.
If you have had the pleasure of taking your dash
apart, you know that there is a horizontal space in
the body about a foot long and with vaguely a four
square inch cross section: It the perfect place for a
second evaporator.
That evaporator could cool air before it comes into
the heater distribution box, so you would have all the
distribution choices you know have for fresh air,
including directing cooled air into the middle
compartment side vents, dehumidified air for the
defrosters, and of course distribution to the two
front passengers.
For the later Vanagons with the a compressor like the
Sanyo 708 there should be plenty of power for the
system.
I know nothing about engineering the sizing, stock
evaporator sizes, getting a prototype made, or a small
production run, but I throw the idea out there. It
seems like possible a relatively simple solution to a
problem that has bugged Vanagon owners for years, and
ursurped thousands and thousands of dollars with
variable results.
