Yes, the engine will work without the throttle switches. Only when they are stuck closed or the wiring swapped with the warm up or auxiliary air regulator is there a drivability problem. The functions missing without are the injector cut off when the engine is over run with the throttle closed and full throttle enrichment.

I have been having some issues with my '85 vanagon and someone sudgested adjusting and checking the Throttle Possition Sensor. I checked the bently and found that the TPS is infact different on an '85....but i sware there is no TPS at all on my engine! I'll get some pictures tommorow, but is it even remotely possible that the engine would still work without one? I dont even have wiring for it. But, i do have a vaccuum port at the front of the throttle body that has a 1 inch hose in it and a screw capping that off. I'm curious as to whats really supposed to be there.
