Kombi in Central Europe is often used as a generic name for station wagons, or estates, but can be used in reference to any passenger carrying vehicles which can be converted to carry cargo.  It comes from German Kombinationskraftwagen.

  This is the first time I heard it used in reference to a VW Bus specifically with no middle seat.
