Subject: FS: 1991 Vanagon Carat - transmission problem
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1

You can see my posting on: http://westpalmbeach.craigslist.org/car/344886933.html

**REASONABLE OFFERS ARE WELCOME** In talking with list members, I think that this Bus could be fixed without transmission replacement (pressure higher from AT than cooling system, so

hopefully no water got in) -- anyway, you are welcome to make an offer or

suggestion.

I've upload a lot of pictures to this location: http://www.citrinecourt.com/vanagon

This vehicle will need a good coolant flush and possible transmission ($630). The ATF cooler leaked ATF into the coolant system. Still will move under its own power, but has not been driven any significant distance since this problem developed.

The Transmission price ($630) comes from here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=239847

Keep in mind the following:

15X7 Wheels with Michelin Hydroedge tires (215/65-15), rated for 85,000 miles! Still looking good with only about 35K on them! GoWesty package (originally priced at $999) - http://www.gowesty.com/ec_view_details.php?id=3075&search_phrase=tires&start=

New (within the last 3 months) hi-torque starter, new price $199, GoWesty

again: http://www.gowesty.com/ec_view_details.php?id=2395&category_id=80&category_parent_id=

Recent water pump -- got at a Vanagon event, replaced within the past 6 months.

Recent front rotors and new front pads (GoWesty again) also New Master Cylinder at the same time as rotors (I was an idiot for ruining the rotors, but the braking system is top notch now).

Main cabin fluorescent electrical assembly is new, the old one quit.

The A/C compressor is within the last 3 years (a rebuilt one was installed), HOWEVER, the main high-pressure hose has a slow leak. It is running with the R134a and does get cool, but if you know anything about the A/C in our beloved Vans, it isn't cooling the van like today's vehicles even with everything is perfect. You can add 134a yourself (I do this when I'm going on a trip), it will hold this for some time, I think weeks, but that will change as the high pressure hose leak progresses. My thought on this is that if you replaced all the hoses (and the receiver/dryer), you'd have a top notch system.

Installed an Alpine CD/MP3 player, but I still have the original radio unit.

Plus I have a few parts, like new spark plugs (current ones are a couple of years old), new rotor was installed, have new cap and spark plug wires. I

also have some oil-based shocks (Bus Depot, cheap ones so I didn't install as I didn't think my ride was that bad). I do have an automatic transmission rebuild kit as well. I'm sure I have misc additional parts that I cannot remember.

Oh, how could I forget -- the heater fan, the one BURIED in the dash, is about 3 years old. When I got the Van it didn't work at all (the fan motor was siezed). This was quite an exercise in replacement, but it is DONE.

The gremlins that remain are: recently the cruise control, rear washer/wiper and backup lights quit working. I have not diagnosed this, but since they DID work, I must have clipped a wire or disconnected something in the dash (during some tinkering with radio wiring).

So, gather your thoughts, make me an offer and perhaps we can make a deal. Let me know.
