Some observations following the bearing replacement:

1. The mechanic I used sucks. I was done with him shortly after he started. The dust cap was not seated on the hub securely - it sprang off when I took the wheel off. 2. It's amazing that bearings that look so good could make such a racket. Races were smooth, roller bearings turned freely. I can only assume that the taper of the old race and the newish bearing were considerably different. 3. It is a treat when things go well and as visualized. The whole operation took 2.5 hours (one wheel) including a stop at the Assvanced Auto for grease and quite a few minutes wandering around the plaster shop looking for various tools. 4. The tip about grinding the old race to a smaller diameter and using them to drive in the new races worked a charm. Thanks to whomever suggested that. 5. Note to self: need new speedo cable. The sleeve at the hub end is deteriorated, the rubber grommet in the back of the spindle won't seat.
