Another option is to have a shop do an inspection on the vehicle prior to finalizing the purchase. Living in Alaska any vehicle that is not local is a long way away. Seattle alone is 2500 miles by road or over $1,000.00 to ship a vehicle, add to that the cost from where the vehicle is to Seattle and we could easily spend $2,000.00 in transportation. Because of this what I and others up here have done in the past and will do again is have buyers inspections done prior to closing a deal on an automobile. Prior to purchasing our `87 Westy Syncro in California 4yrs ago we looked at half a dozen vans across the country and I paid for inspections on several of them, the others either sold first or after discussing them with their owners and/or seeing photo's I passed on them. Inspections do add to the price of the purchase but can save you a lot of money later. They will not keep you from having problems on the road, they should however cover all the basics, engine, drive-tra
in, brakes, suspension, etc, and you can decide from there whether to ship, drive, or have repairs done then drive home. We look at the drive home as an adventure and as long as you are resourceful, adventurous, allow extra time, and have a good inspection done prior to departing, then go for it and drive.
