First impression is the outer/inner rings are black cast iron. The middle ring and balls look like steel. They are very tight even after adding greese. They should work fine but I have no idea about their longevity. Only time will tell. I bought it because it's cheap and I believe it's better than rebuilt units. I have worked on CV joints before so I know how tough/easy it may be to work on a whole axle. Buy a whole rebuilt axle will be a lot easier to install by DIY. But if you want to know it is properly done or feel it is properly done you can try DIY. The toughest part is to remove the CV joints from the axle. If you have a press it will be piece of cake. I reuse original bolts. Mine have no rust. They should be better then those come with the joints. BTW, I do not use a torguq wrench for those bolts. I simply tighten them to what I feel tight. The CV joint I replaced 10 years ago is still fine today. I don't think those bolts should be too tight. Of course you can use a torgur wrench. Just keep in mind if you break any bolts it can be a nightmare to deal with. Don't beat me up on this. It's been working fine for me on both of my Vanagons. David
