The hole in the flywheel is smaller than the pilot bearing in 99% of
vanagons I have seen. there was some  83's WBX s with a larger opening and
the 914 flat 4s
I would have another look at the hydraulics and I recal Daryl mentioned
sometimes the T.O. bearing cross shaft can wear in an uneven fashion as to
push on the pressplate so it chaters or does not release properly.
If the disc is bent from hanging the trany off it then the disc will not
disengage not that Ive ever done that
