It's been nearly 15 years since I wrenched on these things for a living, but
we used to pump the pilot hole full of grease, then coil some twine in there
till it was nice and tight.  At that point, we'd take an old pilot shaft and
hammer it into the pilot hole, which would inevitably push the pilot bearing
out in a blast of greasy ecstasy--always worked for me.  I've used this
technique over an over again and have never once used a pilot bearing
puller.  YMMV.
