And more on this "off" topic... When I lived in Portland, Or had a friend named Ken Luthe who was the president of the Porsche Club there (year about '71/'72). He was "well-connected" to the Porsche community .. as he should be, and repeated a story told him by a friend who drove a "stock" 911 at LeMans in about '70 .... "when the 917's would go by at 100mph faster than I was going, it sounded like someone rolling down my window and putting the muzzle of the 12 gauge shotgun to my hear and pulling the trigger". There apparently was just no way to avoid that blast at that speed, and the speed differential was so great that it wasn't doppler-oriented in its sound delivery ... just a very loud blast.
