Sam,

You are going to need to go to a smog station, which should refer you to a
BAR ref to look it over well and sticker it. The CARB won't be involved. It
might be worth contacting someone like Stephan at Stephan's Autohaus that
has lot's of experience in this area, and also know refs that aren't
unreasonable.

Hi again,

        I put a 1988 I4 Audi engine into my 1986 gas vanagon. I live in
California. The van is still registered, but I will be ready to get it
inspected and update the registration soon. The engine is younger than the
van, was bought in California, and has all required emissions equipment
hooked up, so things should be straightforward, but if any Californians
out there can let me know what steps to take and what their experience
was, I'd really appreciate it. I'd like to go to the DMV and/or CARB
forewarned!
  I did have a look at the CARB website (a mess) and I haven't been able
to find the posts of others who have done this on the list.
