There's the difference. Most dealerships out here pay salary now. Commission is quickly disappearing, even at the independent shop level.

It must mean they are even more difficult to retain than here... the Boston area is likely very close to high priced CA dealerships, they bill shop rates of at least $90 an hour, and techs make %30 or less of that. Of course some will make more, but I don't think it is the average because many more are paid way less.

Not sure at which dealerships you know techs, but out here in California, the techs are very well paid. Many of them earning above 6 figures...

The techs generally have a dislike of their jobs, all pressure, low pay, no pride in their work because it would slow them down, and this manifests itself in a bizarre hatred of the customers themselves. I know plenty of good techs, but the good ones that are also good guys won't be working at a dealership long whether they plan to or not.
