My OXS light on the dashboard has started flickering. The O2 sensor was replaced a few months back; a month or so later, the light came on. I tried (many times) to reset the mileage counter by pressing the button on the speedometer cable box, as described on vanagon.com. It wouldn't work, though - the light stayed on. The mechanic that replaced the O2 sensor tried the same thing, and the light still stayed on. He noticed that a couple of the wires that lead to the box had been clipped by somebody (some previous mechanic, I assume). I tried a few days later, and reseated the electrical connector (with its remaining wires) on the speedometer cable box, and the light finally went off. Now, though, the light's begun to flicker and come on occasionally. Is there any reason I can't just unplug the wires from the speedometer cable box? I've looked at the wiring diagrams in the Bentley manual, and I'm confused by additional wires that appear to lead to surprising places (surprising to me) and have no obvious relationship to the O2 sensor mileage counter. I'm worried that if I unplug the wires then the fuel pump will only run when the left turn signal is on, or the horn will beep when I put on the brakes, or I'll cause some similar electrical mystery that will suddenly manifest itself on a dirt road far from home while I'm playing that banjo music from "Deliverance" on the CD player. Any thoughts? Oh, and if we get the light to stay off permanently, I promise to remember to replace the O2 sensor when I hit 240,000 miles. Thanks for the help. -Steven Sittser ________________________________________________________________________ AOL now offers free email to everyone.
