I don't know of any source of these starters new. Even if you went to VW you would be getting a rebuilt one. The ones we sell are Bosch rebuilds and I have had virtually no problems with them. I put one in my 86 Syncro and it works great. If you don't have the locking rear diff you can drop the CV axle on the passenger side and change the starter without too much trouble (still a pain but doable).
