Geez you're picky...
You already said you had a peel (lift the edge of the pot)... other than
that it's up to your nose and experience.
You have to get used to handling the pot hot anyway as it has to pre-heat
(like the pizza stone) to be effective.
Otherwise go back to eating meat and beans like any normal camper would. : )
