Did that all the time. Enjoy the ride over Tioga Pass, if that's on
your path. You will feel slight loss of horse but you can't drive fast
(35 - 45 MPH mostly). You will be on 3rd gear a lot. A section of the
Tiago Pass will require 2nd gear to climb. You probably will see a
line of cars behind you but they will understand RVs are worse than Vanagons.
If you choose to go over highway 104 (Sonora Pass) it is very steep over
the eastern side. You may need 1st gear sometimes. So make sure your
first gear works. No kidding. Some folks probably know Vanagons will
survive without the first gear as long as you don't try to go over a
10,000 ft summit somewhere.
You will enjoy the Tioga Pass more (highway 120) but unless you already have
a national park annual pass you will have to pay $20 to pass through. It is
in Yosemite territory. They make you pay that even if you plan to only
take one breath through the entire Tioga Pass.
If you take the Sonora Pass it will be free but there isn't that much to
see. Well, the scenery is nothing comparable but the Tioga Pass is just
more interesting.
What to watch for? Falling rocks I think. Oh, yeah. I once saw a group of
young men and women jumped into Merced River (within Yosemite) right in front
of me. They had no cloths on. Well, what they did was like breakfast everyday.
They were so comfortable and natural. I did not feel disturbed. I had my
camera on my hand but I decided to not take any photos to disturb any of them.
I just watched, along with a dozen or so people nearby, for a few minutes.
It's America. It was like watching some geese swimming in a pond. But I doubt
you will see something like that. So don't look for it.
