Why would the water pump belt help here? You are not telling which area is the leak happening. That guy probably was thinking of the O ring behind the oil cooler. But it can come from other places too. If its "mega oil leak" it certainly shows where it comes from. Running the engine while parking, has to make it happen. If everything is full of oil, it maybe best to give it a wash and then wait for it to drip out from its place. Zoltan

Hi,

I am trying to fix a mega oil leak on an '86 Vanagon for a friend. Although we are unable to see the leak, a local VW rebuilder / machinist told me to "remove the water pump belt and I will see it".

Apparently the leak is from one of two possible places, but most likely an "o" ring-type gasket that can be replaced without removing the engine. If this is the case then which "O" ring / gasket should I be looking for?

Has anyone had this problem before and fixed their leak ?? What should we be looking for once the "water pump belt" comes off? Any Bentley reference pages to help me out??

Thanks, Shawn
