Seems to me that my 84 had the same blinky light syndrome several years ago. I scoured my repair log and could not find the info, but I believe I had swapped instrument clusters with a known working one. It worked, so I knew it was something in the instrument circuit. I did replace the light/gauge, but I also remember putting a new voltage regulator in there, too (the one in the instrument cluster, not the one on the alternator). Sorry if that's too vague...
