At some point, wouldn't it have made sense to just take it out and have a
local rebuilder somewhere fix it for you? Or even have a shop do it.
Unless the armature is really toasted, most rebuilds consist of cutting
the commutator, new brushes, springs bearings and cleaning or replacing
the solenoid contacts. Most likely one of these repairs would have got it
going at least temporarily.
