Your suggestion is what I would have taken had I not an appointment .

Spending the time trying to find a replacement or getting a rebuild was not practical for reaching the destination with limited time.

In the end, a fuel filter clogged with storage tank fiberglass caused me to miss the last day .

So yes, taking time is great when you have the time to take- this is not a vacation, but a business trip ala Vanagon Westfalia style.

I should have allowed 15 days and not 8.

It's been a while since the last road trip cross country and the roads are also worse and more beat up. My Advice: Avoid I-80 at all costs. Get a clear reusable glass inline fuel filter.

And oh yes, bring a spare starter.
