I've seen the seal leak between the final drive and the A/T....but you would see fluid around that area, not in the bell housing. It's basically a great big o-ring. Not hard to replace once the tranny is out of the vehicle, just undue 4 bolts and separate the two pieces...you could separate them in the vehicle if you loosened the engine mounts and tranny and lowered the whole package about 12-14 inches (to clear front tranny mount), but easier with tranny on the bench.

If you take the tranny out to do the torque converter seal, might want to change the final drive to A/T seal at that time also, not too expensive and they are usually hard and ready to crack if not previous replaced.

Also the governor cover o-ring could leak...that one is easy to change with the tranny still in the vehicle.
