I did the same on my 82. 

As long as you put in enough snaps around the entire thing it works fine
and holds tight. Its hard to get the exact spacing right ( I have 1
tight snap I must move slightly)  I had to buy 2 extra packs of the
snaps at the hardware store but that is likely user error.   

A couple things that helped me
-----------------------------------
Duct tape the screen up tight for sizing / alignment then drill the
holes thru the screen vinyl and metal at the same time. 

I gave it a about a 1/4" overlap on the floor so it holds the base by
friction to the carpet. 

Don't push the drill in too hard, you'll kill the bit, let it eat thru
the metal

I just got one of those sliding door screens from BD. It says it fits an
'85+ but will fit an older van with "some modifications".  Has anybody
with an '80 to '84 installed one of these? If you could snap a picture
or two for me as to where you put the snaps and what you had to modify
that would be great.

If I don't get an answer back I'm going to have to film another movie,
this time it will be "How Not to Install a Door Screen". ;)
