I don't remember any particular problem with the elevation going over Tioga (the highest, I think), Conway & other passes & summits in the Sierras. You will be shifting down for sure going up, probably way down for some of the tighter curves, especially if there's much traffic. Better to enjoy the fantastic scenery! You won't have enough acceleration to take advantage of short passing lanes and you'll block faster traffic if you try. Be careful of the brakes going down Tioga if you're fully loaded. A good excuse to pull out occasionally and enjoy the overlooks.

These are the roads where a 5 speed transmission would be very welcome. The differences between the 2-3-4 gears are too much.
