Hi Eric,

Right you are. Clamps of all sorts generally have protruding sharp parts of all sorts, located in areas where thighs and tummys can be poked when seated or moving around the table. Bungees + rope looks like the best solution to me. I'm thinking that a couple lengths of 6mm nylon Kernmantle rope with bowstring loops on the ends can be draped over the tablecloth at both ends of the picnic table, and tensioned underneath with bungees. No sharp bits, secure, packs small, lightweight, inexpensive, and is e-z to set up & take down.
