Subject:      First brush with VW parts weirdness

I certainly did not see this coming.  I must have left
the front fan on high when I parked Sunday evening and
now it cannot be switched to any other setting.  Runs
fine on setting 3 but it's determined not to be turned
to any lower setting.

The plastic knob pulls out of the dash easily and I
see that it is ALL plastic, including the shaft with
the two flats that fits into the switch body.  I'm
reluctant to put muscle on it lest it snap (how did I
avoid that?) and I'm planning to modify a 16d nail for
use with Vise-Grips.  We shall see.

I'm determined not to rush out there and do something
stupid that will break it.  I'll take my time,
investigate, and massage it with the correct tools and
a mechanic's skill until I break it the proper way.
