Doing the Subaru harness, gathering the conversion parts, the maintenance to the Subaru engine and assembling the engine can all be done while you are still driving the VW. You would end up with a 'turn key' motor sitting there ready to install.

My VW 2.1 put a rod thru the case on the 7th of March (an afternoon, coming home from work) and I fired it up with the Subaru 2.2 on the 31st of April. This was last year, 30k miles ago.
