Subject:      New Engine Conversion

Our current backlog of Subaru customers (several months) is pushing us to develop another conversion. As much we like Subaru engines in Vanagons, the supply of late model engines limits us to 3-5 conversions a month. Rebuilding old engines is cost prohibitive. After evaluating other engines based on fitment, performance, availability, and cost, we have decided on using GM's Ecotec line of engines as the basis for this new conversion. The only close competitor was the Ford Zetec, but the Ecotec line had far more factory engine choices (142, 172, 205, 265hp) versions and NO TIMING BELT. One of our mechanics used to work at a GM dealer. I asked him how hard it was to remove an Ecotec from a car. He said he didn't know, he never had to do it!!! The target price for the base, 2.2 liter 142 hp/150 ft lb conversion will be 5800, including complete exhaust. The only options will be AC and a clutch. This is competitive with the TIICO engine conversion price, but has far more power and low end torque. The 172 hp version will follow shortly after at about 7200. A 205 hp (at the wheels) supercharged version will follow 6-8 months later. The price for the supercharged version will still be under 10k. We will still offer Subaru's for the foreseeable future, unless demand tapers off.
