Bicycle leg clamps work, have no protuding parts, light, easy to store. Otherwise, take 4 inch PVC pipe, cut it in strips about 2 inches, then cut a segment out (1 1/2" or so) that allows it to expand over the table. Sand well. 4 of those will take care of most tabletop situations.
