Subject: OT: Roof Mounting GPS
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed

Not exactly Vanagon mechanical content, but I came across a GPS receiver/antenna that plugs into my laptop, and works with the mapping software to track, and to guide to locations....

I have a handheld GPS for hiking and geocaching, which I usually attach to the laptop and whomever is traveling with me can play with it but batteries, and lost signals when inside the van, makes it less enjoyable than it could be.

This antenna is just an enclosed plastic box, with a serial port connection, about 3X2 inches, with four threaded inserts that I guess are intended for suction cups, but what I don't have, is the mounting parts to attach it to the outside. Apparently, there are suction cups, and some other means, but since I don't have them, I am curious if the collective wisdom of the list, might have some suggestions as to where I might find some ways to mount it. (probably ought to note that its not a westy, so the roof is metal.....)

In an ideal universe, we would all have westies, and I could go to the store and get four suction cups, with 8X32 studs to pop right in there. Lacking a westy, or a store that I can think of, anyone got any ideas where I should look for such a thing, or maybe a whole nuther way to go about it? I figure that the way all you guys get by with clever implementations, maybe someone has seen such things...

Thanks for the space. I appreciate any suggestions or ideas...

John
