There's something counter-intuitive about these rides. My Saab 9000, like
any other car in its class, out-handles and out-accelerates and generally
out-performs the Vanagon in every other way, yet I leave it in the garage
and choose the Vanagon most of the time. These clunky old tubs of lard are
just funner to drive, even if they don't have the super conversion engines
everyone is talking about. To say nothing of hauling your little cabin
around with you and plunking down on the top of a mountain...


In the museum in Death Valley I was looking at covered wagons and thought,
Maybe that's the appeal of these Westies--a modern covered wagon. Could it be?
