Like Loren says, that was a pretty common method of powering small mills on
the coast.

When I lived in Hope, BC there was a mill up near Dogwood with a two door
'55 Chevy 40 or 50 feet away with the back axle driving a long flat leather
belt powering a wickedly huge circular saw.

Savagely dangerous on all counts, like all facets of logging in those days,
but picturesque.
