Been running oil temp wires underneath my air cooleds for decades and hasn't been an issue on or off road. Now, if done sloppily and the wires are dangling and hanging down, well yeah, yer gonna have a problem sooner or later.

I don't really care much for monitoring oil temps on wasserboxers though as the coolant temp is more important (unless perhaps some major, heavy duty towing is going on) IMHO. I'm gonna be removing my oil temp on my 84 over the summer so I can eliminate another "worry gauge". If I want a bank of gauges to monitor each and every thing, I'll learn to fly a plane or go back to driving an air cooled VW :-)
