From my POV, the US, in general, leads the way in consumerism. Canada is not far behind. In fact we may already be there.

We're all prone to being brainwashed by "the machine". And movies like "Wag The Dog" make the point.

I watched "An Inconvenient Truth" AND "Who killed The Electric Car" all in one night. Pretty f'n scary.

If you haven't already seen it, watch the Electric Car movie. This might answer some of your questions!
