John, when you set to 1 turn the vlaves are not going to be pushed open. The valve springs are far stronger than the little springs inside the lifters. The lifters are the ones get pushed down. Oil in the lifter gets leaked out and self-adjusts. The valves will still seat on the seats. The self-adjustment may take a few minutes to complete. This may affect the compression check if it is done right after the vale adjustment.

I have always set to 2 turns according to Bentley for my 84 Vanagon. My 84 is now at 150k+ miles. It runs very well as if it were still within first 50k. It easily cruises at 70MPH and climbs Pacheco Pass withouf shifting to the 3rd. I used to tinker on the valve adjustment on my 84. Eventually I set it to 2 turns then forget all about it.

There may be some other reasons to call for 1 or 1-1/2 turns that I have not found necessary. But setting it to 0 turn is simply too far off, in my opinion.

David
