I'd suggest that you "flicked something at it with your weed whacker,
thus the shatter. The bulge could have been caused by heat builup in
the van.

  I had a rear glass shatter on an 88 Grand Voyager. I was pulling a
Boler trailer down a gravel road at the time. Near as I could figure
the tires kicked up a stone which bounced off the trailer and took
out the glass. Sounded like a shotgun. Then the shattered glass
slowly cascaded into the back of the van as I watched in the mirror.
This of course happened in the rural netherland about an hour before
a good prairie thunderhead roared in. Gaffer tape and garbage bags
saved the day.  If you're ever in a similar situation, reinforce the
plastic with a crosshatch of tape. Not just the perimeter.
