Yup. Clarinet is a reed inst.
I have heard all wind instruments refferred to as "winds". Brass and reed.
FWIW, I believe the clarinet is "half valving" it up the tube on that
Gershwin lick. i.e. opening and closing tone holes half way a bit at a
time. If that makes sense. The "lip" is involved too.
Speaking of the "lip"...
Of course they blame the reed when things go wrong, unlike us brass
players. We KNOW it's our lips that are to blame! (either that or the
cuties in the cello section.... our concentration drifting while
looking around)
