Subject:      Rebuilding Power Steering Rack - Help Needed

I finally decided to take on the project of rebuilding my badly leaking steering rack.  Just got the ZF seal kit ($80) and mounting bushings ($22).


  I know everyone on this list who has owned a Vanagon with the original steering rack has had to either replace or rebuild it.  So I just finished reading all the posts with the subject of "steering" and the body text with "rack and rebuild" from the archives most of them were about removal and installation of the rack but NOTHING about the rebuilding process!


  Has anyone on the list done a rebuild and could provide a little insight of important things to keep in mind to do or not do?  I was hoping maybe someone had documented this procedure in detail and esp. with pictures?  If no one has done this with pictures I will make a step by step rack rebuild procedure.


  One of the posts mentioned that the threaded locking ring was very difficult to remove and a special tool should be used.  Any ideas about that?


  On section 48.4 of the Bentley it says to "Only use special steering gear grease Part Number AOF 063 000 04, or equivalent to lubricate steering gear."  Where can I get this grease or equivalent?  Dealer?  Is CV joint grease the same?


  I would really appreciate any info on this asap as I have one week to do this before I start my new job!!
