I was reading a couple of posts about attendants at the pump. I remembered, the first time I was here in the US, I rolled up to a pump and sit waiting in the car for a couple of minutes and still no one in sight to pump gas. Later I found out that I have to do it. Since I have never done it, I found out all kind of different pumps have all kind of different ways of letting me have gas, with arms to lift, knobs to push, arm to turn one side, sequencing properly, pay first, pay last, credit card, etc. Missed the attendant's good service, who while the gas was going, cleaned the window, checked the oil, checked the coolant, washed the rear window too if it was real dirty, checked the tires' pressure. Often two guys were doing it to get done in time. Tips of course. Now, I check the oil and coolant, there is no compressed air at the pump and you are lucky if there is one somewhere nearby for a quarter, but you must be fast before the automatic shuts off. Yes, employment does come in this picture, but not without work done to folks who need it. BTW I was coming from South Africa where it is unheard of pumping your own gas and such and there are half a dozen not highly paid attendants hang around in uniform of Shell, BP, etc. Here, they are pulled out of service and now live on government aid, became "Americans who won't do that low paying jobs", replaced with just as lowly educated Southern foreigners legal or not, who in turn will also do the same in time and breed larger families for more gov. aid. Welfare, like the communists proved it, breeds a dependent society who like it or not will vote for their keepers, who paid to buy these votes from the workers money and hope to have more of them idle to have more votes, thus financing their ascent to rule over the lot with the taxes that are paid by the ones who work, and not of their own. Kind of making you pay for your own rope to hang you with. Typical communistic deed, where no dissent, opposition of the least is tolerated, as seen lately of trying to hush up the conservative radios, while 95% of all the media is owned by them already and obviously loosing the battle against the sensible 5% who would be executed in Iran, Iraq, or the old East Block. To control the minds you must have the pulpit for all the time and allow no time for any other idea. Like they say, "you have free press if you own one". In this country you only need the money of a few billionaire to buy all the TV and radio stations and newspapers, magazines, program the minds of the public according to their preference, thus they would own essentially all there is here, including the most modern military to defend or attack any country they wish. Its all in the minds, and they make sure they will put it in there. They are working hard day in day out to make you believe they want you to believe to get where they are planning to go with your helping votes. Did I write anything political? Really not. Only put out the principles that are already in work. In communism it was not money but gov. power that dictated the direction without votes or any consent from the public whatsoever. They were the "THEY". Here we have theys too, when we refer to the ones who do things without our consent or directions given by us, actions that no one would approove of otherwise. Elected officials who can do almost anything they like once in office. I call it "democratically elected dictatorship". I have the feeling that "direct democracy" which originated in Greece, has the merits we would like to excercise today. And having today's communication tools, we can get in contact almost every individual within a very very short time and have his/her consent to a decision. BTW "direct democracy" was when the crowd was on the town square and voted by hand raising for or against issues that were brought up. Thus, instantly, the town, or those days a country, has reached a decision. Today, the whole country is not just a town and the population is not only fifty thousand. That is why we are experiencing the same maladies as the Romans had with the senate and congress and whatever, and special interests, etc, with all the possible human weaknesses of corruption of any kind, bribery, personal threats, etc. This way, no representative can represent as it was naively hoped. So, we might hear about "direct democracy" in our time and voting on issues on the internet. The times of democrats' owned voting base would be eliminated when the welfare world is shaken up. I was shocked to learn that they are paying for every part of the life of a person, including medicals, housing, day care, food, car repairs and gas and probably much more that I have not heard or read of, beyond help, continuing without end, ensuring the next generation to continue without loosing stride for guaranteed votes, paid with public money from mostly conservative or republican pockets. This way the opposition pays for the other sides electoral base. Yes, there are some full timer Westfalia members in this Vanagon community who can not afford housing and still keep their head high without taking money from the gov. Those in Africa who helped at the pump were only part of the government compulsory employment system. Today, when you employ a servant, you must pay them their medical, pension, vacation, food, uniform, housing, etc. And there are servant living at every house in South Africa, usually a separate little house on the property, one room with bath room. The guy who cuts the lawn comes once a week. He will also wash the cars and clean the swimming pool if you let him. Great place to go for retirement. Your money is worth about ten times, summer every day, all English, members of the British Commonwealth, same time zone with Europe, great golf courses with nice club houses with showers, even the medics are cheap. I can't think of anything more now. As you see, many things are interrelated. Ask questions if you must. Call me anything you like. Have a nice day. Zoltan
