AFM is likely. But I have a different observation. The 87 starts and spins fast when it is cold. This already tells a lot about it. First the ignition is fine. All wires that sometimes will break all your bones loose are connected and the plugs are spitting fire. 2ndly the fuel line is too connected up front to the tank with proper effort from the pump. The temp sensors appear to be doing their job by telling the ECU to feed more fuel when they feel cold. And the engine does spin and spin faster. The only trouble is when it does warm up it coughs. That tells me that the air/fuel mixture is not right for warm idle. Check for air leak in the intake system, especially between the AFM and the actual intake manifold. My 83 and 84 will idle even with the AFM cable unplugged. This is a very nice Vanagon feature allowing me to point fingers at other parts of the engine. Be aware that very often 10 fingers are not enough. Use your toes. David
