Ben,
You are a good man... to put this on the list!!! Sometimes you have to hit
someone over the head with a 2 by 4, to get them to listen. Far too many
people in this American "throw away society" overlook or fail to look at the
value of good maintenance. That value could be a life saver! The old
saying "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure", really holds true
in car maintenance. That guy who had you inspect the car probably just
wanted to hear you say that he got a great deal. But, when the truth was
told, he was too embarrassed to accept that he made a bad decision, and
unfortunately he compounded that decision by making another bad decision in
not taking your advice. Ben, keep those Vanagon's on the road, and keep
hitting the stupid people over the head with 2 by 4's!

People are plain stupid.... that include some of you here on this list.
2 days ago, i inspected an 87, original fuel line, no more clamp on the fuel
rail, or what was left of them, piece of rust.
Something like that, but worse:

So, i offer the guys to at least replace the clamps because this is to
dangerous... he said how much? can it wait till next year? I said NO!
I said bro, i'm busy like hell but i can not let you go like that, he said
again, how much? i tell him about 20$ for all the clamp + 1 hour... he said,
i will wait till next time.
2 kids in the back....
Plain frigging stupid person... so go die in you van, it will be your
coffin.
Don't tell me i'm rough! yes i am, because people are ignorant, and that is
ok, my job is to tell them. So this guy probably tought that i was trying to
riped him off.
It was my Job to tell him, the following is NOT my job, it's something i did
so people can be more aware.

I'm so tired of telling the same story. 50% of people just don't care, go
and drive what could become your coffin.
I have so many ugly storry about stupid Vanagon/Bus's driver's...
Here a quick one: one guy, 87 Vanagon, good for the crusher, he paid 13k, i
fully inspect the van, pieces of crap, not much clutch left, not much brake
left, master is leaking, no compression on 2 cylinders, only 2 motor mounts
left (on 4).... I tell him fix the van, put it in your backyard until you
have moeny or sell it for 1K, but don't go in a 2000 miles vacation with
that coffin on wheel, you got 2 kids in the back and one is only a few
months old... he said ok, thanks Ben, he feels stupid... lately, on a local
mailing list... i see that he is still going in vacation and the van was NOT
fix... he his in a bubble of is own right now, he feel stupid that he bought
that van and he doesn't want to hear the truth.
Go kill your kids men, i have NO pity for this kind of person.
Believe me, i know how stupid we all can be, i was one of those guy with my
old 87, but now, i know a lot about those vans, and i'm sharing what i know,
me, no one told me anything at that time.
