Insulation between the side of the van and the rear of the reefer is very very very useful if that side of the van is being baked by the sun.

Take a look at the venting article and try to emulate one of the Good Venting schemes. As can be seen, laminar air flow upward is achieved by the use of baffles which squeeze the air close to the bits that want to have their heat removed, and discourage random circulation of hot air back down or around and around. Now, what you do between the rear of the reefer and the van is up to you. Good Venting 2 could be achieved by building in a foamcore or other easy to experiment with wall behind the reefer and the side of the van. Me, here, in my climate,* I'd see about filling in the space between this new wall and the side of the reefer with insulation. Or you can just leave the existing thinnish insulation in place. Or forget the new wall and build in baffles per Good Venting 3. And park with the driver's side away from the sun.

I don't live in a sufficiently humid or watery clime to advise on how to minimize insulation = rust problems, maybe someone else can chime in here, referring to the document
